CREATIVE SOLUTIONS TO SOCIAL & ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS
Art and Wellbeing by Deborah Mills and Paul Brown
This new publication from the Australia Council's Community Cultural Development
Board contains dozens of dramatic examples of how direct involvement in arts activity
across Australia is contributing significantly to whole of community wellbeing.
With case studies tackling domestic violence, rural population decline, tensions
in public housing, ecological issues and so much more, Art and Wellbeing
is an inspiring assembly of ideas and concrete examples of the potential role
of arts activity in achieving sustainable social, cultural, economic and environmental
outcomes for communities. The book is aimed at encouraging more work between arts
and cultural agencies and other organisations with social, economic or environmental
objectives and it includes practical advice on how to integrate community cultural
development programs across agencies. FREE!

FORUM SHOWCASES KEY IDEAS IN DEMONSTRATING THE VALUE OF THE ARTS
"What do we reckon? Measuring the cultural, economic and social impacts of
the arts in Australia"
Eighteen high profile panellists and an audience of around 100 arts
practitioners, academics and policy workers from NSW, Queensland, Victoria and
beyond gathered at the Byron Bay Writers Festival on 29 July for a one day forum
to discuss current research and thinking on the impacts of the arts. The variety
of presentations and quality of debate provided a comprehensive (if brief) overview
of the state of thinking on this important topic for the arts and creative industries.
Some of the topics included
the role of core arts industries in the creative economy and the impact on changing
career structures
the challenge of collecting comparable data for meaningful policy development
in Australia
developing effective relationships between the arts and social policy and whole
of government approaches.
Outcomes
'What do we reckon' has been recorded and a free CD of the day's highlights
will be available from Regional Arts NSW soon. A bibliography of current Australian
and international research was prepared for the forum and is available for download
from the Regional Arts NSW website here.
A full report on the day's proceedings will also be made available online and
in ArtReach
magazine and fuel4arts.com will be hosting an online forum on the topic for ten
days from 20 September. Stay tuned to the Regional Arts NSW e-Bulletin for more.

TOURING:
THE FINAL FRONTIER. IS IT WORTH IT? - A SAMAG SEMINAR
30 August, Sydney
Artists, curators, galleries, producers and venues alike have many goals that
lead them to seek out or take on touring opportunities. This may include exposure,
sponsorship or funding requirements, income and amortisation of expenses. But
does touring really deliver and meet these expectations? Is it possible to achieve
all these goals as a package or does something always suffer? SAMAG has brought
together a panel to look at touring; is it worth it from budgeting, recourses
and profile perspectives? The question of realities and the current models being
used will also be explored and debated. This seminar promises to be a lively and
insightful discussion based on real experiences helping us all look further into
our motives, objectives and the realities of touring. Speakers include Richard
Evans, General Manager, The Australian Ballet; Debbie Abraham, Director Lake Macquarie

THE
2004 UNCO GRANTS - FROM THE NETWORK OF UNCOLLECTABLE ARTISTS (NUCA)
NUCA's first big project was the creation of a set of bubblegum collector cards
documenting Australia's 50 Most Uncollectable Artists. 'Astronomical' sales have
resulted in a budget surplus, which NUCA is plunging back into the network by
offering grants will a total pool of $2,000 to artists proposing worthy "Uncollectable
Projects". Send NUCA whatever is most appropriate in explaining your grand
idea - jpgs, actual photos, video or film, sketches, blueprints, plans, prototypes,
rumours, or illustrative cakes
and as much info as you can about why you
need the cash, and a bit of a breakdown as to how its to be put to use. Email
