2003 Open Section winner'SOUTHERN MANDALA, GONDWANA OPALESCENCE' SHEARWATER WEARABLE ARTS PERFORMANCE
28 - 30 October, Mullumbimby

The 4th annual Shearwater High School wearable arts show will be a creative fusion of colour, dance, drama, lighting and performance, featuring dozens of entries from local TAFEs, schools and the wider community competing for $8,600 in prizes in front of an audience of up to 500 people. All Shearwater students are involved in the production in some way through the integrated learning program, but most particularly those from the Visual Arts & Textiles, Dance & Drama and VET Entertainment Industry courses. This year's show has taken inspiration from the mythical, mystical and mysterious that is at the creative heart of the Australian continent. The design possibilities are applied to the medium of fibre, textiles and found objects to reinvent and challenge our perceptions about the world and our place within it. Cost: $29/$35. MAJOR AUSTRALIAN FEATURE SCHEDULED FOR PRODUCTION ON MID NORTH COAST
A major new Australian feature film based on the Murray Bail novel, Eucalyptus, will be shot in the Bellingen and Dorrigo areas on the Mid North Coast following negotiations with the producers by Film Mid North Coast. With a budget of $15 million, the production is expected to be a significant boost to the local economy, as well as for the adjoining local government areas of Coffs Harbour and Nambucca. Ward 6 is the stage adaptation of Anton Chekhov's passionate short story of the same name about a world-weary doctor in a dilapidated hospital in rural, pre-revolutionary Russia. Ward 6 is a world-premiere and a unique collaboration between the director and the cast - in this case the male actors from Third Year of the BA Acting for Screen and Stage at Charles Sturt University. SARIS, SIGHS, SONGS AND SWEAT - A HISTORY WEEK EVENT

A photographic exhibition enhanced by music, sumptuous textiles and hilarious cartoons, that unpacks the Indian Sikh experience of migration in the 19th and 20th Century to work on the banana plantations in the area surrounding Coffs Harbour. THE TICHBORNE COLLECTION - A HISTORY WEEK EVENT

Roger Tichborne worked as a butcher in Wagga Wagga in the 1870s. He claimed to be the heir to the Tichborne Estates in England. The trial to prove his identity is one of the longest and most famous in the history of the Bar in England. While not succeeding with his claim, the allure of the story has been and continues to be the inspiration of many books and studies. Saumarez Homestead presents an Exhibition of Artefacts from the three owners, Dumaresq, Thomas and Whites and their managers who lived in the original homestead between 1835 - 1888. GUIDED TOUR OF LITHGOW BLAST FURNACE - A HISTORY WEEK EVENT
12 September, Lithgow
Lithgow is regarded by many as the crucible of Australian heavy industry. This district saw the birth of the Australian iron & steel industry and was a significant early player in coal mining, shale oil production, minerals processing, meat freezing, pottery, textiles processing, mass production manufacturing and precision engineering. The tour will involve a walk through the ruins of the Lithgow Blast Furnace, which produced half of the iron used in Australia during the early years of last century. SINGULAR VISIONS

An exhibition which introduces artists exploring a particular theme - a singular vision - in their individual bodies of work. In 'Selection', Beth Hatton uses weaving to explore our complex relationship with the Australian environment: her rugs, using kangaroo skin off-cuts, and straw sculptures rework traditional materials into thoughtful examinations of the impact of settlement on the land. OFF BROADWAY RETURNS TO COOTAMUNDRA

VERBATIM THEATRE WORKSHOP

The Australian Writers' Guild and NSW Ministry for the Arts presents a one-day Verbatim Theatre Workshop. This increasingly popular form of theatre uses the words of real subjects but the skills of a playwright and is a growing theatrical phenomenon throughout Australia and the world. Celebrated playwright Alana Valentine explores the making and shaping of verbatim theatre and its growing esteem as a new form of exciting and 'authentic' drama. Tronicphosis, a dedicated night of exploration into experimental music and visuals, is looking for your video art, VJ performances, animations, loops, experimentations etc. Their aim is to encourage new visual and musical forms and to create links between artists. [OUT OF GALLERY]
A collaborative project developed by Blacktown Arts Centre in partnership with the School of Contemporary Arts University of Western Sydney. The focus is to move designated artistic and social components beyond the confines of the gallery to a range of locations throughout Western Sydney. The project encourages artists to explore experimental approaches to the presentation of contemporary visual arts in the public realm of Western Sydney and to allow the Western Sydney wider community to directly interact with contemporary art out of traditional gallery spaces. SCHOLARSHIPS FOR INDIGENOUS STUDENTS TO STUDY AT AFTRS
The Australian Film, Television & Radio School is the key national centre for the training of gifted film, television and radio students and the high-level professional development of those already working in the industry. There are two key Scholarships open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to study at the school in 2005. The Macquarie Bank Indigenous Scholarship is open to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people to study directing, producing or screenwriting and the Myer One Year Indigenous Scholarship is open to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people to study directing, producing, screenwriting, documentary, sound design, editing, digital media, cinematography or design. Scholarship stipend is $25,000 pa (taxable). Successful scholars will commence studies at the School in late January 2005. AMRAP COMMUNITY RADIO FUNDING
The Australian Music Radio Airplay Project is pleased to announce new funding for community stations and broadcasters to produce short program content for satellite and web distribution. Funding is available in the categories of: Music Correspondents - Experienced community radio broadcasters and their sponsoring stations can be paid to produce five short radio pieces about contemporary Australian music - and Live Music Recordings - Community stations can be paid to produce edited radio packages of live music performances. SIXTH NSW CITY OF THE ARTS PROGRAM 2005 - 2007
Applications are invited from local government authorities in country areas of NSW to become the Sixth City of the Arts under the NSW Ministry for the Arts' City of the Arts Program. The aim is to enhance the cultural life of people living in country areas by providing a focus for regional cultural initiatives. Every two years, the NSW Government designates a country centre in the State as the City of the Arts. Previous Cities have been the Blue Mountains, Broken Hill, Armidale, Port Macquarie and Tweed Shire. Under the program, the designated centre and its local government authority (or authorities) will receive assistance of up to $150,000 per year for the two years 2005-06 and 2006-07 to coordinate a two-year program of cultural activities and projects; strengthen existing arts services and resources in the community; and stimulate the development of an active arts community in the region.
