RANSW
RESEARCH A RIPPA
The Australia Council for the Arts is using the audit
of arts impact research undertaken by Regional Arts NSW as the basis for the
re-launch of its arts research digest, arts rippa, early next year. "The re-establishment
of arts rippa builds on the valuable time and effort Regional Arts NSW put into
the bibliography for their Byron forum," said the Australia Council. "Clearly
evident at this event was the need for better access to improved networks and
information resources on arts and cultural policy research matters. The bibliography
provides an excellent overview of research activity in this area and is clearly
of ongoing value to the Australia Council and the arts research community more
generally." arts rippa profiles research in Australia with emphasis
on the arts industry and artists; arts employment and training; cultural policy;
arts production and consumption and planned research. Entries are sought now with
a deadline of 3 December. Contact Anne Cahill Tel 02 9215 9178 Email a.cahill@ozco.gov.au.
REGIONAL CINEMA PROGRAM WINS PREMIER'S AWARD FOR RURAL SERVICES
The
NSW FTO's Regional Cinema Program took out a Bronze Award in the 'Services to
Rural NSW' category of the NSW Premier's Awards in November. The program grew
out of the recognition - brought to the FTO's attention by NSW RADO Jack Ritchie
- that in 1998 at least 50% of towns in regional NSW had no access to cinema.
As a result of the program, within four years, 65% of towns with a population
greater than 1,000 had an operational cinema and now here are over 40 community
or volunteer-run cinemas and screenings in regional NSW. The program was based
on access and equity for regional and rural areas and one that recognised the
many benefits cinema can bring to a community - not simply entertainment and social
interaction, but economic benefits, skills development for young people, a focus
for community development and community health and wellbeing. Full story on the

DEMAND
STILL STRONG FOR QUICK TURNAROUND GRANTS
Strong demand for the Regional Arts NSW Quick Turnaround Grants Program ('Quicks')
has led to the expenditure of a three month allocation in just two months. 'Quicks'

arts workers to respond to opportunities that present themselves at short notice.
When the entire 2003/2004 annual budget was expended in less than 3 months last
year, it was decided to divide the 2004/2005 allocation into 3 blocks - $10,000
for each quarter until 30 June 2005. Ten projects have already been funded since
1 October including:

'BLACK
DOG' WRITING COMPETITION
The Black Dog Institute is holding a writing competition to help uncover the history
of the term 'black dog' as a description for depression. A number of people who
have first-hand experience of depression have described their depression as a
'black dog' - famous among them was Winston Churchill, who used the term 'black
dog' to describe the crippling depression he suffered throughout his lifetime.
It is thought that the term has even earlier origins. 1st place - $5000; 2nd place
- $3000; 3rd place - $1500. Website www.blackdoginstitute.org.au/media/eventscal/index.cfm
