COMMUNITY CELEBRATES IN ALBURY
4:30pm Saturday 19 June
An
enchanting lantern procession and spectacular outdoor community performance on
the banks of the Murray River in Albury on Saturday 19 June. Flag dancing, percussion,
masks, stilt-walking, puppets, sculptures, acrobatics, fire drawings, singing,
Aboriginal dance, fire spinning, an original soundtrack and amazing visual effects
are all part of "Enchanted River" which has been developed by the community
with the assistance of professional arts workers. Put on your warm clothes and
gather for a procession along the river track to a performance space in the park

IS IT WORTH IT? ART
IN AUSTRALIA - PUBLIC FORUMS AT THE WRITERS' FESTIVAL
How the arts measure up culturally, economically and socially is a theme for
this year's Byron Bay Writers Festival on 29 and 30 of July. The Australia Council
for the Arts, the Northern Rivers Writers Centre and Regional Arts NSW are presenting
two panel discussions at the opening day of the Festival on 30 July titled "Is
it worth it? Art in Australia" and "Why
can't writers make a dollar?".
These will follow the national
one day forum for researchers, practitioners and policy makers on 29 July, "What
do we reckon? Measuring the cultural, economic and social impacts of the arts",
which was announced in the last e-Bulletin. Regional Arts NSW is pleased to announce
that Anne Bamford, Gail Cork, Eva Cox, Stuart Cunningham, Ros Derrett will be
joining Scott Rankin and David Throsby in the line up of participants at the forum.
Attendance is $75 with a three day Writers Festival pass (30 July to 1 Aug) on

ARTSWORKER IN REGIONAL
NSW WINS OZCO YOUNG LEADERS AWARD
Melinda Collie-Holmes is one of three artsworkers selected to receive the
first ever Young Leaders Awards from the Australia Council for outstanding work
in community cultural development. Together with Gorkem Acaroglu (Vic) and Jane
Jennison (Qld) she has been nominated by peers to receive the $10,000 award which
recognises the achievements of artists and artsworkers aged 30 and under working
within a practice that addresses social justice issues and is driven by principles
of inclusiveness. Melinda has been working with Indigenous communities and disadvantaged
youth in far western NSW with the Shopfront Theatre for Young People for the past
five years. She is also the director of Ruby's Story, about the life of
Aboriginal singer Ruby Hunter, which opened last night at the Opera House as part
of the Message Sticks festival.

A CAPPELLA SINGING WORKSHOP

A unique opportunity to attend an a cappella singing workshop with the Artistic
Director of the renown choir, Cafe At The Gate of Salvation, Tony Backhouse, hosted
by the Ardlethan Community Choir. A two day workshop will include developing aural
awareness through gospel singing (you do not need to read music), encouraging
participants to develop their own melodies through improvisation, singing a variety
of gospel songs including Australian compositions, developing presentation skills

ARTS FAIR AT LISMORE
LANTERN PARADE

The Lismore Lantern Parade is integrating an arts fair into its parade this year.
Held on the same day as the parade the fair will include market stalls with vendors

and decorate them brightly to fit with the theme of the Lantern festival. There

Now in its 4th year, 'The Short Crap Film Festival' is not like other film festivals

SHORT & SWEET 2005
SHORT PLAY FESTIVAL
The world's biggest festival of short plays - Short and Sweet - has launched its
2005 season with a call to Australian playwrights for entries. In 2004 Short &
Sweet presented 76 new plays, none longer than 10 minutes, directed by over 70
directors and featuring over 200 talented performers. Short & Sweet 2005 will
be held at the Seymour Centre and Newtown Theatre at The Edge from January 5th
to January 29th, 2005. The best ten plays of the bunch will be selected to compete
for the coveted Short & Sweet Award, handed out at the conclusion of the Festival.

Professional development grants for new artistic directors. Newcomers to the role
of artistic director within a company can face a very challenging and steep learning
curve within the first twelve months of their appointment. Flying Start grants
are an initiative set up to support incoming artistic directors of companies receiving
Key Organisations funding from the Theatre Board of the Australia Council. The
maximum amount available is $3,000 towards any professional development activities

NATIONAL COMMUNITY CRIME
PREVENTION PROGRAM
The Prime Minister has announced a new $20 million National Community Crime Prevention
Program (NCCPP) which will focus on how to increase the ability of Australian
communities to recognise local crime problems and to pursue effective, locally
organised, crime prevention initiatives. Grants will be national and application-based
and projects will be classified under the following streams:
Community Safety Stream - grants of up to $150,000
Indigenous Community Safety Stream - grants of up to $150,000
Community Partnership Stream - grants of up to $500,000 to support promising and
innovative collaborative community safety and crime prevention demonstration projects
in high-need areas.

THE NATIONAL LIBRARY
OF AUSTRALIA FOLK FESTIVAL FELLOWSHIP
The Fellowship enables a folk performer(s) to research original source materials
held in the National Library folklore archives. The Fellowship is expected to
result in a performance approach or outcome that draws upon and exposes the value
of the collections. It is open to established and emerging performers across music,
dance and spoken word. The Fellowship encourages full artistic freedom and performers
may wish to develop their work in any of the following ways:
seek to accurately re-present traditions based on original styles
use original source materials as an inspiration for new work, where visible links
to the original underpin the creative process
reinvent, arrange or develop ideas upon original source materials
develop new approaches that nevertheless demonstrate an understanding of the importance

NEW HYBRID PERFORMANCE
RESIDENCY AT PICA

The New Media Arts Board of the Australia Council is offering a residency at the
Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA). Individuals or artist groups can
make applications. The residency will provide an opportunity for a period of research
and development into hybrid performance practice. It will also offer possibilities

The Contemporary Music Touring Program is a Commonwealth grant program that supports

TOURING EXHIBITION SUPPORT

Visual art organisations and craft and design centres in NSW and the ACT may apply

1. Touring Exhibition Support, offering a one-off payment of $9,000 towards programs
associated with an exhibition planned to tour in 2006 (note that the MGF manages
the tour of all exhibitions it supports through this category and only one application
will be supported in 2004) and
2. Tour Management, offering in-kind assistance in the management of an exhibition
tour as part of the 2006 MGF-NETS exhibition program (tour management includes
itinerary development, financial management, facilitating education and public
programs, insurance and the distribution of promotional information to tour venues).

The Noise Festival has teamed up with Qantas to bring you its Spirit of Youth
Awards - an invitation to young Australians (aged 25 and under) to submit their
creative work, with the chance to win cash, flights and professional mentoring.
The Qantas Spirit of Youth Awards (SOYA) span fields of endeavour including art,
music and design. The aim of the project is to recognise, encourage and celebrate

RAKA $10,000 PRIZE FOR
INDIGENOUS SCRIPTWRITERS
The RAKA Award is offered in a five-year cycle with a different area of the arts
- creative prose, drama, the visual arts, script-writing and poetry - being rewarded
each year. In 2004, the Award will be for a particular script for film or television,

THE BELLINGEN ART PRIZE
An annual art competition conducted by the Bellingen Community Arts Council, open
to artists around Australia. The theme is 'the character of Bellingen'. The major

REGISTER & ICONS PROJECT
The NSW Heritage Office has 15, 000 heritage items now online. The new Geographic
Information System allows spatial viewing of heritage sites on a map of NSW, analysis
of patterns of distribution, distances involved and searches of areas of heritage
interest. Nominate your favourite heritage place with the interactive NSW Heritage
Icons Project. A list of the most popular sites collected will be presented to
the Heritage Council later in the year for consideration for inclusion on the
