Travel Assistance for NSW Volunteers to attend Meeting Place
conference
10 August 2004
A total of $20,000 has
been made available to Regional Arts NSW to assist NSW arts volunteers to attend
Australia's most important regional arts conference, Meeting Place, this
year.
The funds comprise a grant
of $15,000 from the NSW Government and $5,000 from the Australian Government's
Regional Arts Fund through Regional Arts Australia.
"Volunteers are the
backbone of regional communities and keep our country galleries, museums and performing
venues operating," said the Premier and Minister for the Arts, Mr Bob Carr,
on announcing the NSW Government's contribution to the funds this week.
"This conference is
a vitally important opportunity for regional arts workers and volunteers to meet
one another and share skills.
"Providing travel
assistance is one of the many ways the Government is ensuring that people in regional
areas get the same cultural oportunities as those in the cities," he said.
Held biennially, the 2004
Regional Arts Australia National Conference will take place in Horsham, Victoria,
21-24 October, and is expected to attract more than 600 people. Park conference,
part festival, Meeting Place will
include keynotes addresses, discussions, performaces and exhibitions.
CEO of Regional Arts NSW,
Ms Victoria Keighery, welcomed the grants, saying that volunteers were the mainstay
of arts and cultural development in rural and regional NSW.
"The NSW contingent
will gain a great deal of inspiration, knowledge, motivation and skills development
at Meeting Place," Ms Keighery said.
"They will return
refreshed to their home state to continue their valuable, irreplaceable work in
regional communities."
Applications are now sought
from volunteers in arts and cultural organisations in regional and rural NSW who
are planning to attend Meeting Place. (The funds are to be directed to
travel costs only.)
Applications will be
accepted until the date of the Conference or until all funds are allocated.
