Crack minds crunch creativity | culture conundrums

New DVD brings key thinkers on current directions for the arts to your screen

12 May 2006

A FREE NEW DVD FEATURING HIGHLIGHTS OF A KEY NATIONAL ARTS and creativity forum held at the Byron Bay Writers Festival is available now from Regional Arts NSW following its launch today at a roundtable of peak creative sector and government agencies.

Headlined by UK pioneer in studies of the knowledge economy and creative industries development, Kate Oakley, and Australian economics of arts and culture guru, David Throsby, "How are we going? Directions for the arts in The Creative Age" captures a day of lively discussion and debate including twenty-two big name Australian and international thinkers, a large specialist audience and an ABC Radio crew.

Regional Arts NSW Audience Development Specialist, Lisa Andersen, said the provision of the free DVD was a key outcome from the forum. "It's important that what was said that day can continue to be heard; that people who were not at Byron Bay last year have the opportunity to hear what others are saying and to participate in this important national discussion."

The DVD contains a film made by award-winning documentary film makers, Cathy Henkel and Jeff Canin; audio transcripts of presentations and discussions; and an ABC Radio National 'Australia Talks Back' show which was broadcast live at the forum's closure on the topic, "Does Australia need a cultural policy?"

Topics covered include:
The Link Between the Arts, New Ideas and Innovation;
The Arts and Community Wellbeing;
Cultural Industry Development in the Rural, the Remote and the "Godforsaken Wilderness";
The Arts and Creative Economies;
and the subject of Professor Throsby's recent Currency Press publication, Does Australia Need a Cultural Policy?

All over the world, the arts are making a case for their social importance and economic value in this new "post-industrial, information-driven, global marketplace age."

"How are we going? Directions for the arts in The Creative Age" asks, "Does the evidence support the claims?" and "What policies and infrastructure will support cultural development in this 'Creative Age'?".

Hear the arguments for yourself on your desktop or TV by ordering your copy of this free new DVD from Regional Arts NSW.

"How are we going? Directions for the arts in The Creative Age" was developed by the Regional Arts NSW Audience Development Project. The DVD is a co-production by Arts NSW, the Australia Council for the Arts' Audience and Market Development Division, the Byron Bay Writers Festival, Hatchling Productions and Regional Arts NSW.
