New RADO for the Eastern Riverina

15 October 2003

Lucinda Halbert

Lucinda Halbert arrived in Wagga Wagga this week from Sydney to join the Eastern Riverina Arts Program (ERAP) as the Regional Arts Development Officer (RADO).

Lucinda has taken over the position from Monica Velins who was the RADO for ERAP for the past seven years.

Lucinda is excited about working in the Region, which will offer her the opportunity to bring together her passion for arts and culture and her insights into issues, challenges and creative energy in regional New South Wales, drawing from her farming background at Goulburn in the Southern Tablelands.

During the 1980s and early nineties Lucinda studied visual arts at the National Art School, later practising as a visual artist. She has worked extensively in arts and cultural organisations, her most recent position being Project Coordinator at the Aboriginal Research and Resource Centre, developing a new Indigenous Programs Centre at the University of New South Wales over the past two and a half years. Her knowledge and experience of issues impacting on Indigenous education, culture, and social justice continues to expand through the wide Indigenous network that she has developed through this period and also in her role as Assistant to the Director of the Koori Centre, University of Sydney in 1997.

Arts and culture have always determined Lucinda's career path which includes her time working at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School from 1997 to 2001 as Departmental Coordinator for Screen Studies, exposing her to all aspects of film and television production. Lucinda also worked as a Project Officer in the Performing Arts Unit of the Australia Council for three years starting in 1994 and moving through various roles in Dance Theatre, Music and Youth Arts. She also supported a number of special projects at the Australia Council including Microdance (a collaboration between leading dancers and filmmakers in 1994), Showcase at the Performing Arts Market in 1996, following on to work on LOUD - Festival of Youth Arts (now known as NOISE).

Having been warmly greeted by many people involved in arts in the Region and the RADO network, Lucinda is quickly becoming familiar with the many dynamic and innovative arts and cultural activities happening in the area and she is ready to pour her energy into building on the extensive arts support services that Monica developed so effectively for the Eastern Riverina Arts Program.
