NSW arts and cultural figures in Australia Day honours list

Regional Arts NSW salutes
a number of arts and cultural figures from across regional, rural and remote New
South Wales who were singled out for honourable mention in the 2006 Australia
Day honours list. They are:
Officers
(AO) in the General Division
Dr Patricia Davis-Hurst AM of Taree
For service to the community through promoting awareness of reconciliation,
Indigenous culture and history, and land rights; and to advising, assisting and
mentoring Indigenous people.
Graham Kennedy, late of Bowral
For service to the entertainment industry as an actor, comedian and presenter
significantly influencing the development of the radio, television and film industries
in Australia, and to the community.
Medals
(OAM) in the General Division
Cr Martin Ballangarry of Macksville
For service to the Indigenous community of the Nambucca Shire, particularly through
youth, reconciliation, cultural and health initiatives.
Ms Shirley Barnett of Coffs Harbour
F or service to the community of Coffs Harbour, particularly through theatrical
arts initiatives for young performers.
Mr Bruce Cady of Armidale
For service to the community through the preservation and documentation of the
history of Armidale.
Ms Jill Hellyer of Mt Colah
For service to literature as a poet and as a supporter of Australian writers through
the Australian Society of Authors.
Mr Gregory McKellar of Bourke
For service to the Indigenous community, particularly through the preservation
and promotion of language and culture.
Mrs Janet McNaught of Lismore
For service to the community through the preservation and recording of the history
of the Richmond-Tweed region.
Mrs Jean Newall of Armidale
For service to the preservation of local history, particularly through the Armidale
and District Historical Society and the New England Girls' School.
Mr Peter O'Neill of Wollongong
For service to art, particularly as Director of Wollongong City Gallery, and to
the community.
Mrs Margaret Royds of Braidwood
For service to the community of Braidwood, particularly through the preservation
of historic properties and the promotion of tourism.
Mr Graham Stocks of Albury
For service to the community as an organist and to music education, particularly
through the establishment of the Murray Conservatorium.
Mr Brian Stratton of Bringelly
For service to art as a painter and educator, and to professional organisations
including the Australian Watercolour Institute.
Mr Douglas Webb of Dubbo
For service to the community, particularly through contributions to primary industry,
heritage and regional service organisations.
