A cultural mapping project by Emma Wise
Inside the Outback: Mapping The West is a 'cultural map' of the Western Division of New South Wales, covering around 42% of the state. A beautiful box set of 68 loose-leaf pages including over 130 colour photographs with text, it offers a unique snapshot of life in the region today - a way of knowing this most isolated part of New South Wales.
The project was the result of an Australia Council initiative to raise the profile of the arts in rural Australia through alliances with rural organisations (in this case, West 2000+, the rural recovery program for western New South Wales). Other funding has come from NSW Ministry for the Arts, the NSW Department of State of Regional Development and the Orana Regional Development Board.
The boxed set of images and text has been distributed to schools, libraries, shire councils, cultural institutions and many community groups.
Some of the pictures from the project appear on this website (check the Alt-tags which appear when you point to the pictures).
